About:
Slip is an arts writing platform serving audiences in and beyond New Orleans with an interest in fine art, craft, and material culture. Slip aims to support and stimulate the local arts ecosystem through the publication of exhibition reviews, artist profiles, studio visit write-ups, and more. We believe that this regular critical engagement enriches conversation and cultural production for artists, writers, and readers alike.
Our name pays homage to clay slip — a watery, excess ceramics material that can be used to join separate components or reworked to create something new. The word slip also honors the wetness of our local environment, the history of Newcomb pottery, as well as lingual slippages in meaning and definition. Slip has Southern directionality — things slip down, a reflection of our efforts to spotlight art of the American and Global South.
Write for us:
We are now accepting pitches for ~300-900 word exhibition reviews, artist profiles, studio visit write-ups, and interviews, as well as more experimental approaches to arts writing and criticism. Email us a 3-4 sentence article proposal, a few images, pertinent dates, and a writing sample (for first-time contributors.) Slip is proud to offer compensation of one dollar a word. For pitches and additional inquiries, please contact Slip’s editor, Emily Alesandrini.
Programming:
Stay tuned for more information on our bi-monthly gathering of arts writers. We’ll convene to host guest speakers, workshop new ideas, and discuss craft, ethics, and sustainability in the field of art writing.
Partners:
Slip is proud to partner with Antenna for the production of printed material at Paper Machine.
